My Name is Yaniel and I Suffer From Hobby Acquisition Disorder
I went out for a ride this morning with Alex to Key Biscayne but when we get to the second bridge, the police has the road closed. I wondered to myself if it could be a cyclist that was hit since Sunday mornings are always loaded with cyclists on the Key, but i try to push thoughts like that out of my head so we turned back and continued riding to Dowtown and Little Havana and such. When i get home I do a quick search on twitter to find out why it was closed and like I originally thought, and hoped wasn't true, a cyclist was hit and killed. The driver that hit him, like most braindead South Florida drivers, decided that killing a cyclist wasnt going to slow down his day so he apparently continued on, dragging the bicycle for 4 miles underneath the VW. You must be a special breed of douche, or just plain evil to hit someone, and keep on going for 4 miles while dragging a bike under your car. The worst part is, that nothing will probably happen to the driver as is usually the case in these situations.
For those of you that don't know this Bridge, its a 4 lane divided bridge, 2 in each direction, and its has a wide bike lane on each side. Key Biscayne is a destination for most cyclist in South Florida and gets filled with bikes on the weekends so drivers know to be vigilant and alert, on a road like this theres no way to hit a cyclist unless you're distracted on a phone or really trying to hit one. Even if the cyclist was in the lane, you still have a whole other lane to go around them, and on a Sunday at 8 AM traffic is very light so thats not even a problem. No excuse for this, and I hope he gets prosecuted and receives the max sentence possible. I'm a firm believer in an eye for an eye but that'll never happen. Most likely though, they'll ticket the dead cyclist and let the driver go without problem since thats how these things usually work.
