Got My XBOX Media Center Going! Great Success!

This morning my fever was down so I decided against better judgment, and the warning on the bottle of Nyquil about operating heavy machinery, to hop in my car and go look for splinter cell around town.  Meh, its a honda fit anyway, its not very heavy anyway. I figured if I’m feeling like crap and I’m going to be in bed most of the day I might as well have the XBOX media center going. The first location I hit didn’t have the game but the nice rep at the store was able to track one down at another game stop not too far away.  When I get there I was SHOCKED by the price... $20? Nope... $15? Nahh.... $10, not even close and don’t say $5 either...  The game cost a whopping $1.49, I almost collapsed.  Any way, happy as a pig in sh*t I’m driving home to get this thing going.

Whats another thing you shouldn’t do while under the effect of Nyquil?  Use an xacto knife or try soldering but hey...  Who cares about better judgment right?

The easiest way to do this is to buy an action replay, but they’re like 30 bucks and not readily available.  I’m never going to play games on this xbox and have 3 controllers anyway so I just sacrificed one to get the media center going.  I need a way to get a usb stick to connect to the xbox, the xbox controllers are essentially usb devices with a proprietary plug on it.  I cut the controller cable, leaving enough slack for me to work with, I also cut a USB extension I had to take the female end from it so I have something to plug the USB stick into.  This is all pretty straight forward, just match up the colors, and the controller side will have an extra yellow wire, just ignore it.

    This is the finished product:

This is where things got tricky, the action replay software wouldn’t detect the usb stick but I found a guide online that provided a lot of help.  Seems that it was written by a kid, but its amazingly thorough.

Once I got the game saves loaded onto the usb stick I just followed the info in these links to get everything going

20 minutes later I’m enjoying season 3 of 24 via my media center Xbox!

I also found a new in box, xbox dvd remote on ebay for 5.48 shipped which is going to be great in combination with the media center.  For now I’m using the xbox controller and the iphone xbmx remote. Yea, There’s an app for that...

The website for the developers as well as the support forums are on www.xbmc.org the build of XBMC I used is the t3ch build.

PS no blood was shed and no lives were lost thankfully.
